IDT

IDT, for Integrated Device Technology, is an american company created in 1980 and based in San José, California. Its main activities are conception and manufacturing of electronic components. IDT has now more than 2400 employees worldwide.

At the beginning, IDT started to make MIPS cpus, and then began to design x86 cpus, with the help of its Centaur technology division.
In 1997, IDT released their first cpus based on Centaur's designs, the Winchip C6. These cpus arrived too late on an already mature market dominated by Intel, Cyrix and AMD, and despite their good quality, they didn't get the expected success.
Then followed the Winchip 2, in 1998, which didn't get much success either at this time, clearly dominated by Intel's Pentium II and AMD's K6-2.
In September 1999, while Centaur was fnishin to desgin the Winchip 3, IDT sold his x86 cpu division to VIA for 51 million $. This latter having also bought in the same time Cyrix, the Winchip 3 has been released with the marketing name of VIA Cyrix III, because Cyrix was far more popular than Winchips...
The Centaur team then kept going on designing all VIA's x86 cpus, until latest Nano.

And nowadays, IDT is a Fabless company, mainly focused on communication components and SRAMs.
